The morning tour begins by driving through Johannesburg, passing the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, the largest hospital in the southern hemisphere and into Soweto, the most famous of all South African townships. We pass the sprawling taxi ranks and sidewalk muti stalls of traditional healers and explore a large informal settlement (squatter camp) where you will have a chance to talk to the local people and buy curios. On the right are the striking Soweto Mural Cooling Towers. Soweto's Vista University Campus is on the left and we then drive towards Freedom Square in Kliptown, where historic events led to the adoption of the "Peoples' Bill of Rights" also known as the famous Freedom Charter. In front of us is the Oppenheimer Tower, in the former Sophiatown, a popular lookout point where tourists can view most of Soweto. We then stop at the Hector Peterson Memorial, the museum commemorating the first fatality by police in the June 1976 Soweto uprising.

Nearby is the unique Vilakazi Street in which stand the houses of Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, both recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize. The mansion of Nelson's former wife, Winne Madikezela Mandela, is also nearby. Before lunch (R100 optional) at a typical township shebeen restaurant, Wandis, we view the expensive houses of Diepkloof and the famous Regina Mundi Church, where Sowetans were able to hide in safety from the police during the struggle period. This massive church is one of eighteen Catholic churches in Soweto and contains the famous Black Madonna and beautiful stained glass windows donated by the First Lady of Poland.

The tour ends by returning to your departure point via sections of Johannesburg.
